Simple rethinking of the Spotify desktop app

Goal of the redesign

Make it easier for the user to organize her playlists and discover new songs.

Current state

The app is currently divided into four parts:

  • Top bar
  • Sidebar
  • Main view
  • Playback bar

We can notice that the sidebar is already crowded with 11 elements (Home, Browse, Radio, …) without even counting the user’s playlists.

Reorganizing the layout

We removed the sidebar and replaced it with a top bar that divides the content into 3 main parts: home, playlists and browse.

Home and browse contain content created by Spotify. Playlists keep only the user’s content and are displayed using album covers (rather than a long list of text).

Adding songs to a playlist

We simply replace the playlist’s names by their album covers to make it easier for the user to find the correct one.

Summary

A simple rethinking of a layout and the use of images rather than text can make a big difference for the user experience.
